top fives topping out

June 9, 2008 · 24 Comments

Over the weekend Mr. lbotp and I enjoyed an adult dinner on the town. I wanted to go to the new Cafe Luna since I had not yet had an opportunity to visit the new location. Mr. lbotp had never been to the old Cafe Luna so he had no idea what he was in for whatsoever.

I won’t try to top Lisa’s recent post about the restaurant’s newest incarnation, but I will say that the place is beautiful and everything we ate was scrumptious. We sat at the bar as every table was filled or spoken for, but our service did not suffer. We even were offered a free taste of some yummy sparkling rose since we were gawking at it.

Well while I was oohing and ahhing and gooing and gahing over the place Mr. lbotp came up with an idea. He was willing to bet me that if both of us came up with five favorite restaurants in Champaign-Urbana, that none of them would match. I thought there was the potential for one, but when it came down to it, he was right. These places are our *favorite* restaurants in C-U, the places we go back to again and again — often for the same dish — not necessarily the places we might say are the “best” for this and that.  The poor thing couldn’t even come up with five, while for me it was a struggle to limit it.

His List (in no particular order):

Mezzaluna — A newbie. His vote for best pizza in C-U.
Alexander’s — A classic. He’s a meat and potatoes guy.
Farren’s — A downtown treasure. Burgers and fries for everyone.
The Beef House — OK, this isn’t in C-U, or even in our state, but I allowed it. See Alexander’s.

My List (in no particular order):

Milo’s — I could eat that chicken salad everyday.
Thara Thai — Pass the Panang Curry. And the spring rolls, is it lunch time yet?
Dos Reales — Loving the new black beans on the menu.
Cafe Luna — Best soups and quiches in town; see above.
LePeep — All LePeeps are not created equally, and ours is unparalleled in quality.

The fact that our lists don’t match (although Farren’s was close up there on mine) is pretty emblematic of the divisions that exist in our marriage regarding food. He is a meat and potatoes guy who doesn’t care for ethnic food. I don’t eat red meat and was a longtime vegetarian who enjoys trying new things. Who knows where Peanut will fall in that spectrum.

Don’t be afraid to try this exercise with your significant other, and post the results.

Dos has black beans? My husband loves Dos, I’m more of a Fiesta person (for the black beans). We may have just found common ground!

And my daughter wanted a burrito for lunch today. Sounds like it’s in our near future!

    Siam Terrace
    Silver Creek
    KO Fusion
    Montgomery’s on the Square (Monticello)
    Bayern Stube (Gibson City)
    Escobar’s

  • Amy // June 9, 2008 at 3:12 pm

So I asked Andy for his list and apparently I married a quadruple by-pass redneck:

Lil’Porgy’s, Long John Silvers, Weiner Schnitzel, Seaboat, Juniors

Me: Farrens, Cafe Luna, Timpones, Italian Patio and El Torero

  • gamera // June 9, 2008 at 5:22 pm

Ha! I went to Luna Saturday night…maybe we were there at the same time.

  • Lindsay // June 9, 2008 at 7:22 pm

Here are our favorites in order . . . we have at least two in common.

    His-
    Timpones
    Chipotle
    Papa Dels
    Radio Maria
    Lil’ Porgy’s

    Mine-
    Cafe Luna
    Escobars
    Timpones
    Radio Maria (for brunch, specifically)
    Siam Terrace

Can’t wait to check out the new Cafe Luna digs . . . we are celebrating my big 3-0 there in a few weeks, and considering we have a toddler and a newborn, a babysitter alone sounds like heaven right now, so I’m sure a babysitter combined with an amazing meal will be more than memorable.

  • Lisa // June 9, 2008 at 9:12 pm

Hmm. A thing worth pondering. I will have to consult my esteemed partner and get his list. If he’s honest, I don’t think we’ll have one place in common, either. Well — maybe Timpone’s. I’ll be back!

And totally off-topic: Just saw Sex and the City, the movie. Great clothes & accessories, naturally. Plot weakish. Overly long. When they got to the part, near the end, when everybody was dissing Samantha for having put on, like, 10 pounds, I’d had enough.

    Thara Thai (Pineapple Pad Thai!)
Fiesta Café (Three soft tacos with Chicken OR the veggie fajitas)
Bread Company (Portabello and Brie Sandwich)
Le Peep (I love the Drifter, MacTroll loves the Desperado, and X-man is a funny face pancake kind of guy)
Radio Maria (Particularly when they finally do the pork chop in the blueberry sauce)

  • fco.j // June 10, 2008 at 7:22 am

Only good restaurant in cu is Bacaro.

  • lbotp // June 10, 2008 at 9:51 am

Dana — I think we should hang out some time since I could have put any of those on my list too. I love the drifter! (easy on the onions, please).

Lisa — Yes, I thought the Samantha story line was clearly the weakest plot point. I wish they had spent more time on Charlotte — I love her husband and he was clearly underutilized.

fco.j — I think you missed the boat here. I for one could never afford to go to Bacaro every time I eat out, but if you can, more power to you.

PB — I have never made it to Montgomery’s, but have been wanting to. KoFusion just missed the cut on my list. It’s one of my faves too.

Leeanthro — I think the black beans are better at Fiesta, but I like the fact that now we have choice at Dos.

Lindsay — Congrats on the big 3-0 and getting a babysitter :-).

  • MissNadine // June 10, 2008 at 12:37 pm

    The Miss:
    Papa Del
    Papa George
    Thara Thai
    Goodfellas
    Original Pancake House

    The Mr:
    Papa Del
    Thara Thai
    Seaboat
    Goodfellas
Lai-Lai Wok (specifically, the Taiwanese S&P chicken)

Hon. mentions… B Won (for chap chae); El Charro (mmmmm torta de milanesa); Carmons

  • M_Six // June 10, 2008 at 6:03 pm

    In no particular order:

    Siam Terrace
    Bombay Grill
    Silvercreek
    Courier Cafe
    Radio Maria

  • Kris // June 11, 2008 at 7:27 am

I can walk to downtown Urbana, which bumps up the frquency of my visits to places there, especially in pleasant weather.

    The Courier Cafe
Mirabelle Bakery (not exactly a restaurant, but generally wonderful food)
    The Bread Company
Crane Alley (nice selection when one wants an adult beverage, and the alley hasn’t been overrun by smoke on my visit, a relief since I have a kid and am asthmatic)
    Le Peep

  • Mimi // June 11, 2008 at 11:04 am

    El Charro for in-town tacos
El Taco Tako in Arcola for best tacos in the Midwest
    Timpone’s (close to campus)
    Cafe Luna
    B. Won

The Bread Company’s lunches make me sad. The soups might as well come from a giant can.

  • Gnightgirl // June 13, 2008 at 7:11 am

Ooo, I have to agree with Mimi on El Taco Tako; definitely worth the drive.

    My list:

    Thara Thai

Dorcas, on campus, for Korean food.

Mandarin Wok, on campus. There’s a secret menu under the counter! Get the black pepper fish! $15 or so, but it will feed 4 to 6

Esquire’s salmon sandwich with wasabie mayo is one of my favorites

Ribeye’s always a good salad bar

  • Cynthia // June 13, 2008 at 8:04 am

    o.k…..here are my five:

Cafe Luna (bad service and all)
Esquire (otherwise known as Fries and Peanuts in our house)
Siam Terrace (but with all the votes for Thara Thai I must try that)
    Sushi Kame
    Peking Garden

and RIP Carmon’s (the old Carmon’s….we’re still searching for a new breakfast place)

  • Lisa // June 13, 2008 at 3:00 pm

Asked my esteemed partner, and here is his list, in no particular order:

    Kennedy’s (atmosphere and steak)
Biaggi’s (steak, pork chops; must sit in the bar)
    Silvercreek (atmosphere and steak)
    El Torero (breakfast)
Jupiter’s (pizza, of course, and because it’s the site of our first date; sweet, no?)

    My five:

El Torero (breakfast — chilaquiles — my new fave)
    Timpone’s
    Thara Thai
First Wok (house special angel hair; subgum wonton soup)
Seaboat (especially the 2-piece chicken dinner!)

Hey! The old man and I have one place in common!

This was a fun idea, LBOTP, thanks.

  • MissNadine // June 13, 2008 at 5:46 pm

I feel lucky me & the Mr. have so much overlap. although partly that has to do with a much more limited selection than our previous home. (I could have made a top 5 Indian restaurants y’all, and here I can’t get one into the top 10)

Cynthia-I thought I was the only one finding Luna’s service atrocious. Went to the new location last weekend–there were 5 parties eating dinner at the bar with 1/3 of the tables empty, since the host told us all he couldn’t seat us. Bizarro.

Lisa-my Mexicana friend tells me Fiesta has a superior chilaquiles.

  • veganlinda // June 13, 2008 at 11:33 pm

Hmm, we were forever dissing the restaurant selection in C-U and would go up to Chicago every chance we could for a good meal when we first moved back here, but now we are poorer and it isn’t easy to hop up there with three kids in tow so we have totally settled.

My list and I’m guessing my dh’s list overlaps (I know for sure my kids totally agree with my list, but they would add Flat Top) quite a bit since we like almost all the same food, but I’ll ask him when he gets back in town (he is off enjoying the Chicago Diner no doubt):

Thara Thai (I’m surprised we don’t all run into each other there!) The owner is GREAT to us and our kids. Extra points!

Siam Terrace (love that they offer brown rice!)

KoFusion (could not get enough avocado sushi while I was pregnant with number 3…ate there like once a week…sometimes twice)

The Coffeehouse (Bloomington-Normal…only place in the area to get a vegan breakfast…yum!)

The Red Herring (it is hit of miss, but I have to list it since it is the only veg place in town…how sad is that?)

oh, I should also add the Y Eatery (best pad thai in town…the kids just can’t eat it enough)

I used to like Radio Maria, but don’t dig their new menu. We’ve had some good food at Papa George.

I do have a soft spot for Silvercreek since I got engaged there once…not with my dh though, but it was a memorable evening!

Does anyone remember The Bermuda Onion? My dh and I went on our first lunch date there and I miss it. :-(

  • Dana // June 14, 2008 at 10:27 pm

I remember the Bermuda Onion. It was awesome. Back in the day when the Great Impasta was in the little hole in the wall location!

  • Lisa // June 15, 2008 at 12:51 pm

Miss Nadine: Thanks for the tip. I’ve wondered about Fiesta’s chilaquiles but have never tried them.

  • Lisa // June 15, 2008 at 12:57 pm

Oh, and Vegan Linda: Before it was The Bermuda Onion, it was The Greater Downtown Food and Beverage Company. Man, I loved that place. The rolls were to die for. And the freshly squeezed o.j. and grapefruit juice. And the sandwiches. And the salads (Farren’s still serves one of Greater Downtown’s salads; it used to be called Elaine’s Salad, after one of the owners, and is now known as the Strawberry Chicken Salad).

  • Rayne of Terror // June 16, 2008 at 2:00 pm

It’s astounding to see these lists and then think about the grousing and moaning that go on about CU’s provincial living. While I was at UI I often told my professors I thought CU residents and UI students were spoiled babies — ya’ll this is probably more locally owned restaurants than Decatur, BN, and Springfield have combined. As Napoleon Dynamite would say, Luuuuuuuuuuuuuuucky.

  • Old Fart Townie // June 23, 2008 at 9:44 am

No votes for Seven Saints? I could eat there every day….
Maybe this doesn’t count as a restaurant, but the little window in the back of Natural Gourmet has the most amazing Thai food — it’s courtesy of the former owners of Magic Kitchen in Springfield if anyone recalls that joint.

  • Melissa // July 6, 2008 at 11:24 am

    1. Cafe Luna
    2. Bacaro
    3. Radio Maria
    4. Siam Terrace
    5. Bombay Grill
