Supposedly a bagel store is coming to Green Street. Haven’t we been saying that Campustown was a ripe location for that for years?

The OTB is leaving the Brickhouse and is looking for a new stomping ground. Hey, the old location by Big Lots in Champaign is still vacant; if that doesn’t work, isn’t there plenty of room at the new Jupiter’s?

Will Linens n Things become the next chain casualty in C-U, joining recently shuttered Baker’s Square and (is it closed yet?) World Market?

Will the Curtis Road I-57 interchange open this weekend? It’s almost been 20 days

* I stand corrected … thanks 5yic.

actually there’s a workout 24 at the old OTB location now, country fair is moving on up!

Wonder how that bagel place will do; there used to be several bagel places around town, Lox Stock & Bagel at Johnstown Ctr, and downtown CU, and Bagelman’s stores on university, and Kirby avenue…perhaps the popularity of Atkins and South Beach Diets did them in.

There used to be a bagel store at 4th and Green (or near there). The original Bagelman’s location?

I heard that Aunt Sonja’s is going in next to Jupiter. Heard that from someone who works there. Love their strawberry pancakes (which are actually crepes).

Is Workout 24 open in the new Country Fair location yet? I’ve heard they might have childcare. I was thinking of joining when they open. I hope they have the same $10/mo rate.

I used to go to Lox Stock & Bagel downtown all the time! Loved it. Shame it closed. Kafe K makes a great bagel!

Any news of a Super Target near the new interchange? Anything to keep from going to north Prospect!

I think Bagelman’s closed because they changed their recipie and their bagels went from great to terrible. At least that’s why I stopped going. They closed not too long after the change.

    mmmmm … bagels ….

OMG… my wife and I would love a Super Target.

  • Amy // April 16, 2008 at 1:16 pm

Pray for me that there is no Super Target near here. Or should I say pray for my pocketbook. I swear that I can’t leave that store without $100 worth of stuff I didn’t even know I needed. To quote from one of the best movies of all time to describe my addiction to Target:

Charlie Mackenzie: Dad, how can you hate “The Colonel”?
Stuart Mackenzie: Because he puts an addictive chemical in his chicken that makes ya crave it fortnightly, smartass!

Jason … the super target rumor has been circulating for some time, and there is some truth behind it: http://lbotp.wordpress.com/2007/08/05/super-red-hot-rumor/

Leeanthro — there has been some talk for awhile about a pancake place opening over there, but I didn’t know it would be Aunt Sonya’s. That place is restaurant row. And you know Papa Del’s is going in there too! *giggle*

Ben - As I understand it, the people who owned Bagelman’s lost interest in the business and sold off their assets (including the bakery where they made the bagels) and sold the Champaign location to the people behind Kafe K.

Target used to be located where Hobby Lobby was recently off of Mattis by County Market. I always thought they made a mistake moving out to Prospect.

If your craving a good bagel (chewy, crusty - not just rounded bread), Mirabelle in Urbana now is making them. (You can order a dozen if you want your own freezer stash!) Pricey ($1 a bagel) but much easier than making them yourself.

  • janna // April 16, 2008 at 7:24 pm

I would have starved if it weren’t for Lox Stock & Bagel those eons ago when I was a student! And I’m glad to see Aunt Sonia’s is reappearing….

  • Old Fart Townie // April 17, 2008 at 3:05 pm

The pancake house next to Jupiter’s will be Uncle John’s. Any other old fart townies in the house?! That name’s from before the Aunt Sonya’s incarnation.

  • Amy // April 17, 2008 at 4:36 pm

And Original Pancake House is planning on building a second location near the hotel on 1st street. Can’t get enough of their sourdough toast!!

  • lbotp // April 17, 2008 at 10:11 pm

Really? Like, in the research park???? All this talk about pancakes is making me wish it wasn’t Passover this week.

Bagels are good. Bagels on Green St are better.

As for Curtis Rd, I’m pretty sure the 20-30 day thing is “working days,” so we may be a bit off yet. Last week it certainly didn’t look anywhere near done. This interchange will greatly ease my commute, so I’m chomping at the bit for them to open it.
