little blog on the prairie

this is our year

No, I’m not talking about my beloved Cubbies.

Every year I say I am going to the Vet Med Open House. Well, there will be no excuses this year. After all, who can resist a cow with a hole in it? Or seeing an equine fetus via ultrasound? Or face painting? I am determined that Peanut and I will be out early Saturday morning for this annual free event. The Killer Cockapoo will have to stay home; no companion pets allowed.

Vet Med Open House
Saturday, April 5, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Urbana; campus off of Lincoln Ave., south of Florida
Free!

I love Vet Med open house!! I remember the year I found out that c-sections on cows are done while the cow is standing up! And horse sperm viewed through a microscope! There is no end to the fascinating events to be enjoyed!! Have a great time and be sure to share your thoughts on the day.

I want to take The Poo, also. Thanks for the reminder!

You should definitely go… and bring a camera. It takes a long time to see everything, but there’s so many cool things to see. I think going early is the best bet, since it ends up getting REALLY busy.

My daughter (then 4) had fun trying to milk a cow. It made for some pretty good pictures.

I remember going to my grandfather’s work (chemist at commercial solvents) when I was little and seeing a cow with a window in its side. That was probably before my grandfather’s partner’s head was blown off in a work explosion. That sort of thing seems unlikely at the vet school.

Now why do they have to schedule this the same weekend as the Home and Garden show? Grrr. I have guests all day Sunday and now I’m going to have to miss one or the other. Sometimes I miss not having to factor nap time into my plans.

I don’t know, maybe I was just caught off guard at my only Vet- Med open house, but the cow with a hole in its side made me tear up.

I mean I come from “America’s Dairyland”, I’ve shot barn fires with half-cooked cows for the news, and have no guilt about how beef gets to my dinner plate, but that cow just standing there, with people gawking at it, putting their hands in the hole, has made veto every trip to the Vet-Med open house since.

I suggest you plan your trip in advance because it will be a madhouse. Make sure you see the Wildlife Medical Clinic demonstrations as the there is nothing like seeing the raptors close up.

    Have fun!

I hope you went! Open House is always great (we had to be out of town this year-bummer)!

It was fabulous. I was so impressed with the students and how well they handled the crowds. Peanut had a blast. She loved all the animals, especially the little piglet at the petting zoo.

Glad to hear it! It’s always a zoo, but our students do a great job! (You know, they organize and run the whole thing!)
