a new list for a new year

Another edition of Random Thoughts:

  • The Marathon gas station that recently closed at the corner of Prospect and Kirby was doomed from the start. If you recall there were tons of neighbor protests and limitations put on that location — no alcohol, limited hours, etc. Somehow I missed this but back in October the News-Gazette reported that the Paris, Ill.-based Edgar County Bank & Trust was interested in that property. So, if you’re counting, there will three banks within spitting distance of one another. How bizarre. Anyway, there will be some people who will miss that gas station: all the school groups (cheerleaders/athletes/etc.) who used the location to stage car wash fundraisers.
  • You asked, they answered. A “food bar” — that’s grocery store speak for a salad bar — will be coming to the new Savoy Schnuck’s after all, sometime in “January or February.” It pays to complain, people. (Still no spinach pancakes though).
  • Big hugs and congratulations to my good pal Mrs. Chicken over at Chicken and Cheese, who just announced she will be adding to the population of Mybana (that’s what her daughter calls Urbana) in August.

where’s waldo, illini version

January 2, 2008 · 6 Comments

She’s there. Again. On the pages of the News-Gazette (see the Monday in California gallery.)

She is Mandi Patrick, the longtime Illini baton twirler who hung up her sequins in 2005 after seven years of performing during timeouts and on the sidelines. You may remember her very public marriage proposal at halftime of a football game a few years ago, or her sappy farewell performance at the Assembly Hall. Well, she certainly is a loyal alumnus and dutifully follows her alma mater all over the planet. From Hawaii to California to Chicago, there she is in orange and blue, rooting for the Illini on the field or on the court. How do I know this? Because somehow, no matter where she goes, a camera will find her.

Maybe she is in the right place at the right time. Maybe the News-Gazette photogs (hey guys and gals!) have a thing for her. Maybe she hasn’t been able to let go of the spotlight.

Call me crazy, but I think her 15 minutes have long since expired.
