chocolate vs. vanilla

January 20, 2008 · 12 Comments

There are some things we will never agree on.

Cubs vs. Cardinals.

Cable vs. Satellite.

Barney vs. Elmo.

Coke vs. Pepsi.

Somehow, somewhere, someone in this town decided that we all must like Pepsi. It seems that virtually every independently owned restaurant/food purveyor in C-U — the kind that I like to support — only sell the dreadful fizz.

I’m tired of it, so tired of it I can’t even stand it. I need my Diet Coke. Can’t you see I have a toddler? No, I won’t drink your nasty Diet Pepsi. The word makes me want to … you know.

And please don’t remind me that the University of Illinois will complete its transition to the stuff by the fall semester. Maybe I should just go to Fiesta Cafe any time I want to eat out. At least they sell Coke in bottles, even if they have that other stuff in the fountains (how do they get away with that?).

(by the way, the rest of my answers are: chocolate, Cubs, satellite, and Elmo, of course.)

Vanilla, Cubs, Satellite, Elmo and Diet (drink of the gods) Coke.

The only place I can choke down a Diet Pepsi is with Mexican food. I guess because I’ve been eating that combo for 10+ years it finally tastes okay.

I went to Bentos is Springfield for lunch this week and asked for a diet pop and they had … BOTH.

Oh man, I hear this. Just ask Mr. Chicken - he hates Pepsi, and so do I!

From a commercial aspect, it may have nothing to do with the taste, but the level of customer service available from the distributors. I had a shop. I signed a contract for a Coke dispenser. It never arrived despite repeated calls to the salesman and distributor. Pepsi machine? There in a week. Other business owners all told similar stories.

Coke, whether you wanted it or not, didn’t seem that interested in getting the job done.

I rejoiced when I started my job at the UI and found a 65 cent soda machine that stocked every variety of Coke (including Coke Zero, which isn’t bad). Now when we transition to Pepsi (ack) in the fall, it will be strictly BYOC (unless the machine then offers Dr. Pepper, which would be great).

    Chocolate
    Red Sox
    Cable
    and neither, please.

    Pepsi. Pepsi. Pepsi.

I am a die hard diet pepsi girl! If we go somewhere that has coke I will only drink water. It seems like there are plenty of places that have Coke in C-U, because I drink a lot of water with dinners out!

What a lot of people may not know is that the local Pepsi distributor is owned by a local family. A local family that is heavily involved in the community and gives back without looking for accolades. Last year during our plunge for the Special Olympics, I called Pepsi because there were not enough beverages for plungers. 3 coolers showed up filled with all sorts of beverages. No one asked for a thank you, recognition and the coolers were then promptly picked back up and the left over beverages were left. Also Pepsi then ensured that the local Special Olympic office has cups for all sporting events through the year.

I realize it’s a taste issue. However I never see Coke in this community helping out or giving back. I do see the Pepsi family doing it all the time. Perhaps I notice now because they came to our rescue…but they do it all the time for a lot of different charities and it’s not just product. They put their money where their home is…The Greater Champaign Urbana area.

I used to drink a six-pack of Diet Pepsi and smoke an entire pack of cigarettes during a 5-hour shift at the record store in Chicago. That was 14 years ago, and I think the final traces are just now leaving my body.

    Oh, and:

    Cubs.

    No teevee.

    Elmo!

Classic Coke with real sugar over crushed ice, plz.
