Good news for mad recyclers like myself: On Thursday (Jan. 10) , computers and monitors will be accepted for free at Mack’s Recycling in Urbana. This event is being sponsored by WCIA (Channel 3) and its “Go Green” initiative (not sure exactly what that is, but we’ll go with it). Normally Mack’s charges $6.00 to take a computer monitor; computers without batteries are usually taken free of charge.
Also good news (in the better late than never department): Five locations in Urbana are collecting regular, alkaline batteries for recycling, among them the Urbana Free Library and the Urbana City Building.

Thanks for that tip, lbotp. I have four monitors to get rid off. Here’s my chance.

Great news about recycling batteries. Thanks for the info. For a while I was taking them to the Farmer’s Market, but I haven’t seen that booth in a year or so.

We don’t get WCIA anymore, but I noticed as part of their Go Green thing they are interviewing Bloomington Normal’s very own guru of cloth diapers and leader of my hippie mom group, Sarah G. Her business Pinstripes and Polkadots is awesome and she’s one knowledgeable woman. I wrote about her here a few months ago… http://central-illinois.blogspot.com/2007/08/pinstripes-and-polkadots-bloomington.html

Where are they accepting “Illinois Rose Bowl Champion” t-shirts? I got a bunch of those and want to recycle them.
Maybe we could send them to Africa or something….

I dropped off three 19″ monitors today. Sort of depressing because they were all in perfect working condition, yet they just stacked them on the pallet for shipment. Seems like a waste.

Interesting… there was a really good article in National Geographic this month about recycling and where some of these monitors and things end up…. hopefully Mack’s doesn’t send them away to China or Ghana…
anybody know what exactly they do with the computer equipment they receive? It doesn’t say on their website that I could find…

NPR found a bunch along a river in China with Univ. of Illinois property tags on them.
Oops.

If a monitor is in perfectly good shape, why recycle when you can freecycle? In McLean Co any computer parts get picked up in a jiffy by people who presumably can use them. Between Champaign and McLean Counties freecycle groups we’ve recieved a piano, dining room chairs, a computer desk, and have given away lots of clothes, toys, and furniture.
