Dog treat makers have come and gone at the Market at the Square, and none have had the staying power and regular clientèle of Dog Gone Goodies.
But it appears that the killer cockapoo’s favorite treats will be no more, thanks to budget issues at the Mental Health Center of Champaign County. Details were a bit sketchy, but one of the women there Saturday wanted to let us know, as long-time costumers, that they probably would not have enough inventory to sell at the market another time. DGG are also sold at some area pet stores, including Prairieland Feeds.
Not only does KC love the product, but what made DGG special was that the treats were baked, packaged and sold by a vocational program serving adults with developmental disabilities. So not only was my dog getting a yummy treat, but we felt like we were supporting an important community asset and upholding our own personal values.
It appears that DGG are also made in programs south of here, such as Charleston and Lawrenceville. I’m not sure if this is a separate program, or if it will continue. In the meantime, we placed a special order for mini peanut butter treats. There’s always room in the freezer.

Oh noes! Sully loves the tiny little poppable bites! And I loved the whole idea of serving the community by buying them. Durn.
