- Note to Krannert Art Museum: If you are going to host a family-friendly event on a Saturday in the fall, it might be a good idea to not schedule it on during a home football game Saturday. Just a thought. Most kids under the age of 17 don’t live near campus. (I’m glad someone got to enjoy it).
- It’s amazing what people will do to avoid paying the University $20 to park for an Illinois football game. I know this has been going on for years, but I have to say I was a little pissed off seeing Joe Illini Fans parking along Hessel Park at 8:30 a.m. on Saturday morning. It is simply astounding that the city doesn’t do more to try to make money off of those people. Hello Champaign Park District ….
- Bar Louie closed yesterday. Why am I not surprised.
- It looks like we will burning the midnight oil this week, with the Cubs playoff games starting at 9 p.m. local time on Wednesday and Thursday. To think, the last time the Cubs were in the playoffs (2003), I actually went to bars with friends to watch the games. That was a lifetime ago.
- Still waiting for the public message boards on the News-Gazette web site to catch fire.

When did News-Gazette add the forum? I’m at that site daily and never noticed it.
Regarding football parking: I have relatives who get a paid parking pass with their season tickets, only to get to the parking lots and find they are full, so they must park on the streets. The reason the “paid” lots are full is the dang tailgators park their RVs in one space, then take up 5-6 more spaces for their grills, lawn chairs, etc. If the U of I would enforce 1 space per paid parking pass, there would be plenty of off-street parking.

I avoid Kirby AT ALL COSTS on game day. I would like to go to a game one of these days, though …

They get pretty far down our street too. No Matter. They’re having a good time and spending money in other places.

The lot I pay $400/yr to park in is always full on weekends. Luckily the loading dock ramp at my building is always available.
I’d love to see a Panera-type place go into the Bar Louie building. I used to hit Panera twice a week when they were there.

When we go, we park forever away and walk. There is actually a parking garage that is free on Goodwin but it is a long hike. Recently, the MTD started running a shuttle from somewhere near there to the stadium. $2 gets you a ride there and back. The catch is, you pay the $2 up front and then anyone can get on free for the trip bakc because they don’t have time to take money or tickets. They need to get loaded and gone so they can get back to get more people. They had something like 500 people the first week, but I haven’t heard about this last game.

I used to work near the old Panera and that place was a gold mine. I was a regular there, too.
Bar Louie is leaving behind a really nice space. I don’t know what the rent is there, but I think it would have to be attractive to someone.

Interestingly, the Coslow’s/Panera/Bar Louie space has a “For Sale” (not rent) sign in the window. It’s a really crummy, hand-drawn sign that wouldn’t inspire me to hand over lots of money if I were looking to start a business…
Panera was a solid option for lunch for those of us working on-campus. But ah, Coslow’s… that’s the iteration I really miss. Bar Louie just never got a clue and the food wasn’t worth the price, the wait, or the crummy service.

Ooh, Coslow’s! They had the best Irish nachos. Also a BBQ chicken sandwich (back when I ate meat). We would hang out there in high school and do our homework.
Never went to Bar Louie.

Yes, the Irish Nachos! And there was a time that we all had to go down to the basement during a tornado warning and the staff handed out free bottles of St. Pauli Girls to pass the time.

I think it is kind of ass to take the spots around the park, too. There were tons of places to park in the neighborhood around there (we parked on Stanage).
I was going to park at Matt’s house, but I was afraid that rickety, piece-of-crap china cabinet he fished out of someone’s trash might fall over and punch a hole in my rusty car door.

Yes — Coslow’s! I liked that place.
I see that somebody from the Bar Louie corporation said that they “couldn’t compete with the $1 beers” that other campus bars offer. Yeah, (cough, cough), that was the problem all right. Sheesh.
