*super* red-hot rumor

August 5, 2007 · 9 Comments

My best friend’s sister’s boyfriend’s brother’s girlfriend heard from this guy who knows this kid who’s going with the girl who saw Ferris pass out at 31 Flavors last night ….

tells lbotp that a SuperTarget (Target + grocery) will be going up as part of the retail development at the new Curtis Road I-57 Interchange in southwest Champaign. Perhaps this is common knowledge, because of this study by a development consultant which singles out Target as a possible — drum roll please — target as a tenant because of its lack of market exposure to areas south of Champaign.

I’m breathless.

If they do put a Target there, I think you and I will be the only two people in the area excited by it. We’ve already gotten fliers handed out in our neighborhood about how we should band together to stop the “big block” stores.

Awesome! Target used to be where Hobby Lobby is now and I always thought it was a shame that they moved out north. We’re probably half way between the 2 stores, but I would totally go to the new one for one stop shopping and to avoid traffic. Groceries at the existing Target are cheaper (our cereal is a whole dollar cheaper) than the grocery store we use. I don’t know if the prices are cheap at the Super Target stores. Yeah!!!

But my main gripe about SW Champaign is urban sprawl. But it would be good for Champaign revenue to have things at that interchange that people would get off the highway for. The makeup of the city is so different from when I grew up.

Is that what those “Something Big is Coming to Champaign” billboards are about? I’ve been curious and the billboards look like high quality printing (i.e. affordable only by a big company)

Leeanthro — I had a Super Target nearby when I lived in another state. The prices are good, and they have a great selection — especially of organic/veggie food. It was heaven, although my checkbook suffered. I totally agree with you about the sprawl, although what else would be suitable by an Interstate exchange? I’m sure my neighborhood was considered sprawl when it was built 40 years ago. Then again, it is contiguous with the rest of town. That’s why I don’t really have much sympathy for people who live out there who don’t want this in their backyard (as Snmn relates) … that’s what happens when you move to a developing area instead of an established one, you can’t control what will be next door.

Missing — I was wondering the same thing; I don’t know about the printing, but the graphic design sure looks expensive. I thought it was funny that there are a few of those billboards in Urbana.

I live right near the exchange and I would love to have a Super Target there. I can’t wait.

I live near downtown and work in Savoy. I’ve been positively giddy about the upcoming Schnuck’s and now you’re telling me Target is coming? Yippee! Whoo hoo! Yeah yeah! (They’re my two fav stores and it seems quite a round-trip when I want to hit them both). Oh, joy! Rockin’ good news! You’ve made my day.

I’m just feeling old-fashioned today, but it seems strange to (potentially) have a Super Target just around the corner from Curtis Orchards. But, I don’t live in that neck of the prairie, so it’s not for me to complain.

I e-mailed Target to try and confirm this, or at least let them know of my strong support if they weren’t yet considering the site. The surprisingly quick and personal response:

“Thank you for your e-mail regarding a SuperTarget store in Champaign, IL.

As you might imagine, a lot of time and work goes into determining where and when to build a SuperTarget store. There’s involvement by people in the private and government areas, and it may take months or even years to build a store. Sometimes Target is mentioned as an example of a possible store anchor for a project by a developer or city. I don’t have any information about a store in the area you mentioned. Please feel free to check with us again later this year and we’ll be happy to look again.

Have questions about Target stores, products or service? You can give us a call at (800) 440-0680, or visit us on Target.com. Either way, we’re happy to help.

Thanks for shopping with us. “
