The Champaign Public Library is having a princess party on Wednesday. To show my age — gag me with a spoon. The whole princess phenomenon gets my gourd, big time. Let’s just say that when I was kid, being called a princess was not a compliment. I’m not just talking about the marketing machine that is the Disney princesses, I’m refering to the copious amounts of girls clothing that says “Princess” on it, from newborn on up.
Recently, I found this great T-shirt online to demonstrate how I feel about the subject.
I don’t know what I’m going to do when Peanut enters the Princess phase (although Beauty and the Beast is one of my favorite movies.) It’s a good thing that we don’t live far from a great wine store.
What’s getting your gourd today? Feel free to speak your piece.

I personally prefer Queen. I was never a Princess type. Too controlling. Haha. Wine store in Champaign? Must be Sun Singer. I love that place! Great antipasti. I heart sodium.

I abhor the whole princess thing. I want my daughter to grow up to be strong and self supportive. Two books I love are “Paperbag Princess” and “Princess Smartypants.” Good feminist reads for the young set. I successfully shielded my daughter from the princess stuff until this weekend when she received a Barbie Princess doll that dances (a double whammy: Barbie AND princess).
But I think the key is balance. As long as she doesn’t become obsessed like MANY young girls are.

I also recommend _Prince Cinders_, which is a fun flip on the Cinderella story. Great British humor and cheeky illustrations.
Leeanthro is right: balance is the key. And not worrying too much. Every phase passes, and then it’s on to the next bit of fun.
