The other night before dinner I took Peanut to the park near our house. A woman arrived with her two sons, one almost four and the other about 18 months. We chatted a little bit, as moms who have children a similar age are wont to do when their children are swinging aside one another.
I didn’t think much of this conversation after she and her boys wandered away to explore the park’s far reaches. For some reason though, when we left, I saw their car and made a mental note of it. It was a bit unusual, nothing fancy, but the color was eye-catching.
Fast forward to today. I’m at my part-time job when I happen to notice this car parked across from my van. It could be, sure enough it is the same vehicle that this family drove to the park yesterday. And based upon the few nuggets of information this woman told me, I was able to google a few key words (presuming that he or she works at the same place I do) and find out their name. (Does that make me a stalker?) As it turns out, the woman’s husband is a close colleague of one of my bosses.
This kind of stuff happens all the time around here. A few weeks ago Peanut and I were at a child’s birthday party and I saw this couple that looked really familar, but I couldn’t place them. As it turns out, I had seen them at the office. You know how some people have this disorder where they can never remember faces? I can’t forget a face. It’s sort of a curse. But this is life in the little city — where coincidences are every day occurences.

And it’s a small enough town(s) that I just rewound through my past few weeks to figure out if we might have crossed paths at any bday parties! Nah… couldn’t be!
But, uh… you don’t *happen* to know any little boys in Savoy who recently had a baseball-themed party, do you?

Coincidences like that are one of the reasons I love living in a town this size.

Yeah, seems like everyone is a “friend of a friend.”
We should definitely have a C-U blogger mommy playdate soon. Or maybe a mom’s get together for a glass of wine sans kids! Maybe we’ll be surprised to find out that some of us know eachother in real life.

My husband and I have lived here 12 years now, and the kids are one to several years out of high school. Recently there was a News-Gazette in which on nearly EVERY page of the front page section there was a picture or mention of someone we knew, either from Centennial (where the kids went), Parkland (all of us have had classes there), or the Regent Ballroom (where my husband and I dance). I like that about living here!

Sometimes you want to (live) where everybody knows your name…
