  • So a global phenomenon that has carefully crafted its image with one of its core values being opposition against animal testing opens Saturday in our local mall, where a store sells puppies obtained from suppliers unknown that may or may not be puppy mills (the only evidence to the contrary is the emphatic pleading of the owners and staff, which rings hollow. Why not prove it?). Of course, the Body Shop is now owned by cosmetics giant L’Oreal, which certainly has not banned animal testing for the rest of its products. Oh well, it sounded good.
  • I’m thinking of heading over to Allerton Park on Saturday night for the Music in Nature concert in the Barn. It’s nice to see a cultural event that starts early enough in the evening that I can bring Peanut and still get her home and to bed by a decent hour.
  • I’m all about free stuff, especially free quality stuff, and the Cabaret event at Krannert on Sunday afternoon looks to be a winner. If it has C-U music legend Dan Perrino’s name attached to it, it’s usually good. (If you don’t know who Dan Perrino is, here’s a good, albeit a tad outdated, synopsis.)
  • The Gus Macker 3-on-3 basketball tournament has (untriumpantly) returned to town. In years past, the Macker was a good opportunity for local sports celebrity sightings, as many former Illini would play in it and football players would referee it. Not sure if that will be true this time around. If you’re wondering what the heck is going on around West Side Park this weekend, that’s it.

Anyone know how bad (if at all) the bugs are at Allerton during these shows? We went walking there earlier this summer and got chased back to the car by starving mosquitos.

All of those musical events sound great. Wonder if we’ll actually make it to any of them?!

I started shopping Body Shop before it jumped the ocean when my mom brought me some from London when I was in high school. Every time I visited them in Michigan I hit the local mall and stocked up. I still love this place, even after the corporate buyout. Aside from their decent animal testing policies (which at least still hold true even if Loreal doesn’t), they have by leaps and bounds (imnsho) the BEST smelling stuff anywhere, ever, way better than B&BW, which I always saw as a cheap knock off.
