I was hoping the new iPod my wonderful husband gave me awhile back would inspire me to get off my duff and get some serious exercise. Somehow, pushing a stroller around the neighborhood with the dog tugging on a leash just doesn’t cut it.
Reader Lisa sent me some information on a program designed to get women running. If you haven’t run before and have the itch, this might be for you. The Beginning Women’s Running Group involves nine sessions starting July 26 and culminates in a 5K run in September.
Now if only someone could lend me a new pair of knees.

I once followed an Oprah program for running. It was really good; it involved alternating walking and running over a period of weeks. First, you walk more minutes and run fewer each session (e.g., walk for 5 mins, run for 1, 30 mins total), then gradually you build up till you’re totally running by the end. Now, though, I just walk (when I even get that in). I think walking is just as good, so don’t write off those strolls with baby and killer pup!

I really wanted to sign up for the Women’s Running Club but now I can run 2 miles so I don’t really qualify anymore. Oh well. I guess I’ll just steal their training sheets instead.

Second Wind is great, though it can be intimidating. I’ve found there are always some folks looking for running partners, though, and it’s a heck of a lot easier to get up to run when you know someone’s waiting for you….

Thanks so much for posting this, lbotp.
The beginning women’s group is the opposite of intimidating: it’s really 30-40 women of all shapes, sizes, ages, and abilities who want to try running. The training program is very similar to what Lisa describes above, and the paces will vary all over the place as we progress from initial walking to walk/running and then running the 3.1 mile distance in prep for the 5K in September.
Please contact me directly if anyone has any questions. This group got me back into shape last summer and fall after a +4-year hiatus following the birth of my daughter, and I recommend it as a highly supportive community if you’re interested in exploring running.
