Now that Memorial Day has past and June is upon us, it’s time for our summer to-do list. This includes activities that I’ve always wanted to do but never have had the opportunity, or stuff I’ve waited to do until I had more time. Ellen has her life lists, and that’s a little too daunting for me … I need something to digest in smaller chunks!
Here’s a list, in stream-of-consciousness order:
- pick berries at Pontious Farm
- go hunting for treasures at the Third Sunday Market
- get treats at small town ice cream shops, like the Sidney Dairy Barn
- catch a flick at the Harvest Moon Drive-In in Gibson City
- go paddling down the Middle Fork River
- rent a paddle boat at Crystal Lake
- plan a Sunday brunch tour of Escobar’s, Cafe Luna and wherever else we can find it
- attend a Danville Dans game and root, root, root for the home team
- take in a show at the Little Theater on the Square
- Watch the donkey races at the Fisher Fair

Did you ever to make it out to Allerton after you mentioned it a few weeks back? You should definitely add a picnic and stroll around the grounds of Allerton to your summer plans. There aren’t many places like it, anywhere. Bring a camera and be prepared to take many cute pictures of children and statues making strange faces at each other. As for getting into the mansion…if you go in the side door (not the one facing the pond) and ask politely at the desk to peek around, they’ll usually let you, if there isn’t a conference going on or anything. It is quite beautiful in there. Don’t miss the Fu Dog Garden, which is in the opposite direction of where most folks walk from the parking lot, so perhaps quieter on a busy day. Also, it can get pretty buggy, particularly near dusk, so bring repellent.

I’ve been to Allerton many times (a beautiful place for a wedding, I might add). Unfortunately, I didn’t make it out there for the tours of the mansion. … I guess I should put that back on my to-do list!
I agree with you about the bugs … and bugs dig me, unfortunately.

Ah, whoops, sorry. I (incorrectly) got the impression from your earlier post that you hadn’t ever been to Allerton, but now I see that you just saying that you hadn’t been in the mansion itself. Oh well, no harm in preaching to the choir I suppose!

I try to make it to the drive-in at least once a summer. It’s so much fun! I really look forward to buying a ton of cheap junk food and pigging out.

I need to go pick strawberries again this year. The only place I’ve done it is at “Cary’s Garden of Eatin’” (south on First St., I think it is; she sells at the market, too).
And I have some fun memories of paddle-boating at Crystal Lake.
All good ideas!

went to drive in theater tonight. Very cool experence. Only problem was that my 15month old would not fall asleep… missed part of the movie.
They have a 1940 vintage merry-go-round. It was sweet. Totaly recomend movie going experence… it is worth the drive.
Thanks for having it on your list Mrs. LBOTP!

Tolono Days is this weekend. They have all the huge blow up things, food, (I think) a car show, parade at noon, and of course fireworks. My brother-in-law is part of the group who sets off the fireworks (The Boom Boom Boys).
If anyone is looking for something to do this Saturday, head a few miles south and check it out.
