Today’s list:

*The Seaboat is coming to the Kirby Avenue corridor, across from Hessel Park in the old Denny’s Cleaners building. Curious.

*The people folk have been begging the News-Gazette to join the rest of the modern newspaper world and put more stuff online. Well, be careful what you wish for. I just discovered that, without warning, the N-G has put their Web archives behind bars. For $2.95, you can have your story. Of course, this archive is not comprehensive. I’ll have to check what that means for my many links to N-G articles.

*Speaking of our friends at the N-G, perhaps they hired a new copy editor who is not familiar with the area. That’s the only logical explanation for the goof in the silly header above Saturday’s story that read “Urbana County Board.”

*Three cheers for the folks at the University of Illinois, who realize that although they can’t seem to lease retail space underneath the parking garage across University Avenue from Perkins, C-U doesn’t need another tanning salon

Any time you create a new shopping district, even if it’s a small one, no retailer wants to be the first, McConaha said. “We didn’t want to sell ourselves short. We didn’t want tanning salons. We wanted something that really added value, that provided not just a revenue stream, something that would help existing staff and researchers,” he said.

AMEN.

*Wonder if there are really that many Colts fans around here. Come on people, this is Bears country, orange-and-blue, tried and true. Da Bears. Ditka. Payton. See you in South Beach on Feb. 4.

So, is the Seaboat re-locating, or simply opening another location? I hope it’s the latter, as its north end locale is part of why I like it.

I will never in my life understand how ANYONE can be a Colts fan with the worlds most egotistical and whiny QB at the helm there (I already ranted about this in my blog today). There is no Colts, it’s just Peyton Manning. Sheesh.

Is Sea Boat leaving their current location or adding a second store? Seems a shame if they abandon their current location. Although the new one is closer to my office.

I do not want the Seaboat in my neighborhood.

PB: Why not? At least the building won’t be sitting abandoned indefinitely like a lot of buildings in town. Are you worried about eating too much fried okra?

It’s the second location … the sign says Seaboat II. and I think PB was joking. Perhaps he’s afraid of this new Seaboat will do to his waistline.

Oh, I know what it will do to mine!! I can practically walk there during lunchtime, and then pop fried okra into my mouth the entire walk back. It’s a mixed blessing for me, just like Cozy’s Custard going in within eyesight of my home!

    what is a seaboat?

  • mate'man // January 23, 2007 at 2:50 pm

Far’s I’m concerned, any okra’s gooder than none!

A Seaboat near my home — greato. Can’t believe I haven’t noticed. I mean to go there sometimes, but the parking always seems awkward at the Bradley and Market location. I’m just a parking wimp, I guess.

Okra makes me shudder, but I want to try their mac & cheese…

  • lbotp // January 25, 2007 at 10:08 am

They have mac and cheese??? I’m there!

  • Lisa B. // January 25, 2007 at 11:32 am

But no one has explained what the hell Seaboat is? Please throw a crumb to the newcomers.

Lisa M- I think you can park in the big open lot directly east of the Sea Boat on Bradley. That’s where I’ve parked.

Lisa B.- Sea Boat is a small take out place at Bradley and Market. They have fried fish sandwiches, fried okra, and all the other down home southern fare you can think of. I don’t think their “Sea Boat” sandwich is all that fantastic, but if you are looking for something on your way back from the mall, its not a bad place to stop. They are one of the few places in town with fried okra. One of my coworkers says it the best she’s had. I think its probably frozen.

They usually have a booth at the Taste of Champaign, if you don’t get around to trying them out before then.

The new location is a bit bigger. Maybe they’ll have dining and a drive-thru, making it even more accessible.
