Panera with another name?

October 16, 2006 · 10 Comments

If you’ve never been to an Atlanta Bread Company restaurant, you’re far from alone.

The company has stores in Rockford and Warrenville, a suburb of Chicago. That’s it for the state of Illinois. But somehow, the owner of the rights to ABC franchises in this area won the sweepstakes to occupy the sought-after site of the former Wendy’s on South Neil Street (as reported by the N-G last week).

Is it me, or this place (on the surface) just a poor man’s Panera? If you’ve been to an Atlanta Bread Company, give us your impressions.

Could Corner Bakery be next? That might complete the bakery/cafe chain trifecta.

Atlanta Bread Company is, in my opinion, better than Panera. We had both in Rochester and I liked ABC much better.

And can you please tell me how the H-E-Double-Hockey-Sticks freakin’ Wendy’s goes out of business???

I do very much love ABC. It is v much like Panera, but that’s not a bad thing in my book. :)

Bread of all sorts is highly overrated.

I miss Wendy’s, especially the frosty! That being said, I’m looking forward to something new on this side of town. Does anyone else miss Schlotsky’s?

The Burger King on campus went belly-up over the summer. There used to be a Wendy’s on campus too, where the Chipotle/Noodles is now. In my opinion, that is a big improvement!

It will be nice to have something new in town and not just the same old recycled stuff.

Does anyone know what is going on with all the construction being done to the old Menards? I drive by it every day on my way to work and it’s driving me nuts that I do not know!

JLum — it’s going to be a furniture store. It was mentioned in the N-G several weeks ago. Here’s a link to the store’s corporate site: http://www.ashleyfurniture.com/

BTW - Panera was originally named the “St. Louis Bread Company” but they found no one outside of St. Louis really wanted to eat St. Louis style(?) bread, so they gave it the generic “Panera” name.

I wonder if the ABC runs into the same issues….
