Not all Le Peeps Are Created Equal

August 2, 2005 · No Comments

My mom is funny. She likes to make up new names for things when she can’t remember the real name. Take Le Peep, for example. She calls it Peeps. I think she gets it confused with the sugary-marshmellow things my dad loves to eat (stale of course) around Easter time.

Anyway, the impetutus for this post was the excellent breakfast (harvest eggs benedict) I had the other day at Le Peep in Champaign. Of course, this is nothing new. I have been going to Le Peep practically since it opened — so much in the single days that the owner knows me. Although I don’t get there that often anymore, I must express my appreciation for it.

You see, not all Le Peeps are created equal. Yes, it is a chain (mostly franchised), with locations in 15 states. But if you’ve been to other “Peeps” restaurants, you will discover that they cut corners. The food — especially the fruit and vegetables — isn’t as fresh, and sometimes isn’t fresh at all (mushrooms out of a can? blech). Sometimes they’re run down, with tablecloths circa 1981 and fake flowers that have accumulated more dust than your television set.

Our Le Peep is a gem. Hopefully, it stays that way. (And if you want to eat there on a Sunday without suffering a long wait, get there before 10 a.m.)
